CassKai vs Ciel: from historic desktop to cloud-native, multi-standard

Ciel has equipped French micro-businesses and the self-employed since 1986 and is now part of the Sage range (Sage 50, formerly Ciel). We built CassKai as a cloud-native alternative with PCG, SYSCOHADA, IFRS and SCF built in, France + Africa coverage, AI and Mobile Money on day one, and transparent public pricing.

Overview

Ciel is a French brand created in 1986, acquired by Sage in 1992. It focused on accounting, payroll and management solutions for the smallest structures: micro-businesses, liberal professions, craftspeople and the self-employed. Its historic range covers Ciel Compta (accounting), Ciel Gestion Commerciale (quotes, invoices, orders, delivery notes, stock) and Ciel Paie (payroll). These products are historically desktop applications installed on the workstation, with data stored locally or backed up to the cloud depending on needs. For several years, Sage has been consolidating the Ciel line within its French range, notably under the name Sage 50 (formerly Ciel) and Sage Business Cloud. The ease of use for very small structures and chartered accountants' familiarity with Ciel are genuine strengths.

Observed limitations of the Ciel model for a multi-country player in 2026:

CassKai is built as a multi-standard cloud SaaS (PCG, SYSCOHADA, IFRS, SCF) with cross-border coverage of France + 33 African countries. We embed French e-invoicing (PPF / approved platforms, Factur-X, UBL 2.1 and CII formats) and UEMOA, Mobile Money, a GPT-4o AI assistant on every plan, and a cash-oriented approach (DSO, working capital, cash-flow forecasting). The promise is not to displace Ciel / Sage 50 on the pure French micro-business market, where the offering remains simple and well established, but to be the single platform for entrepreneurs and groups straddling France and West Africa.

CassKai is published by Noutche Conseil, a chartered accounting and financial advisory firm focused on Francophone West Africa.

Strengths

CassKai

  • Cloud-native from day one: no local install, automatic updates, access from any device, no server to maintain.
  • 4 accounting standards built in (PCG, SYSCOHADA, IFRS, SCF) in a single product: unique on the market, and essential for a group straddling France and Africa.
  • French e-invoicing (PPF / approved platforms, Factur-X, UBL 2.1, CII) AND UEMOA (FNE, MECeF, SECeF) in the same tool, for businesses invoicing on both sides.
  • Transparent EUR SaaS pricing published online (29 / 79 / 199), all included, no module stacking or reseller quote, 30-day trial with no credit card.
  • Built-in GPT-4o AI assistant on every plan (auto-categorisation, anomaly detection, cash forecasting, balance-sheet analysis, client risk score) and cash-oriented steering (DSO, working capital).

Ciel

  • Historic French brand (since 1986) backed by Sage: strong recognition, long track record and established trust among French micro-businesses and the self-employed.
  • Simplicity for the smallest structures: Ciel has always aimed at ease of use for micro-businesses, craftspeople and liberal professions with simple accounting needs.
  • Integrated French compliance: PCG, French VAT and reporting obligations maintained, with the weight and solidity of Sage behind the brand.
  • Chartered-accountant familiarity: many French firms know and can take over Ciel files, which eases collaboration with an accountant.
  • 2026 reform response: Sage has added its approved platform (Sage Approved Platform, formerly PDP) to subscriptions to support the e-invoicing obligation.

Target Audience

Ciel (and its successor Sage 50) remains a sensible choice if you are a purely French micro-business, self-employed person or liberal profession with simple accounting needs: well-known brand, easy to learn, PCG / VAT compliance, and an accountant who can probably take over your Ciel files. If you value a desktop option with local data, the Ciel / Sage 50 legacy remains relevant on that point.

Migration Guide

Migrating from Ciel to CassKai typically happens in 4 steps over 4 to 8 weeks for an SME of 5 to 50 employees:

  1. Step 1 - Ciel export (week 1): from Ciel Compta (or Sage 50), export the general ledger, trial balance, chart of accounts, journals, customer / supplier sub-ledgers and the FEC (Fichier des Ecritures Comptables, the DGFiP standardised accounting-entries file). The FEC is an excellent entry point because it is structured, exhaustive and regulatorily exportable.
  2. Step 2 - Account mapping via CassKai's migration tool (weeks 2-3): CassKai's import wizard accepts the FEC and Ciel CSV exports, and proposes automatic mapping to the target chart of accounts (PCG to stay in France, SYSCOHADA if you have an OHADA subsidiary, IFRS for consolidation). You validate account mappings case by case.
  3. Step 3 - 1-month parallel run (weeks 4-6): for 1 month, you post operations into BOTH systems in parallel (CassKai + Ciel). At month-end, you compare the trial balance, income statement and balance sheet. If figures match (within rounding tolerances), you are ready for cutover.
  4. Step 4 - Cutover (weeks 6-8): on the chosen cut-off date (typically the start of a fiscal year to simplify VAT and the tax bundle), you stop using Ciel and go 100% on CassKai. You keep the FEC and Ciel archives for the legal retention period (6 years in France under the tax-procedures code, 10 years for accounting records under the commercial code).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can CassKai import Ciel data?

Yes. The CassKai import wizard accepts the FEC (Fichier des Ecritures Comptables, the DGFiP standardised accounting-entries file) generated by Ciel Compta / Sage 50, as well as CSV exports (trial balance, general ledger, chart of accounts, journals, customer / supplier sub-ledgers). Mapping to the target chart of accounts (PCG, SYSCOHADA, IFRS, SCF) is proposed automatically and can be validated case by case. The FEC is the recommended entry point because it is structured, exhaustive and mandated by French regulation, so it is always exportable from Ciel.

Ciel is becoming Sage 50: does that change anything for migration?

Not on the technical side of migration. Whether you are on an older Ciel Compta version or on Sage 50 (the new name of the line), the FEC export and CSV exports remain available and are the entry point into CassKai. The consolidation of the Ciel brand under Sage is more of a product-trajectory matter on the vendor side: for some long-standing users it is an opportunity to reassess their tool. If you are considering a version upgrade to Sage 50 anyway, it is often a good moment to compare a cloud-native alternative like CassKai, especially if your activity touches Africa.

I want to keep a desktop / offline option, is that possible with CassKai?

No, and that is a deliberate choice. CassKai is a fully cloud-native product: no local install, no server to maintain, access from any browser, automatic updates. That is the opposite of the desktop model Ciel historically comes from. If your hard requirement is to work offline with locally stored data, the Ciel / Sage 50 legacy remains more suitable on that specific point. However, cloud-native brings mobility, real-time multi-user collaboration, automatic backup and zero IT maintenance. Most micro-businesses and SMEs find a net gain there.

How long does migration from Ciel take?

For a micro-business / SME of 5 to 50 employees with a single chart of accounts and a single entity: count on 4 to 8 weeks in "safe" mode (FEC export + CassKai mapping + 1-month parallel run + cutover). For a rapid cutover without parallel run (clients confident in the initial FEC-based mapping), 2 to 3 weeks is enough. For a multi-entity group with France + OHADA-subsidiary consolidation (3 to 10 companies), count on 8 to 14 weeks. Our support team assists you free of charge during the first 30 days of trial to help with mapping.

Is Ciel cheaper than CassKai for a freelancer?

For a freelancer with a single module (e.g. invoicing alone), an entry-level Ciel / Sage 50 offer can look very affordable. However, as soon as you add accounting, commercial management and possibly payroll, the cumulative total climbs. Our 29 / 79 / 199 EUR CassKai pricing natively includes multi-standard, multi-user, multi-entity (Enterprise plan), e-invoicing and the AI assistant, with no add-ons. We always recommend comparing total cost over 24 or 36 months at equivalent functional scope. Exact Ciel / Sage figures should be checked at subscription time as they vary by edition and contract.

Does CassKai handle 2026 e-invoicing like Sage?

Yes. Sage has added its approved platform (Sage Approved Platform, formerly PDP) to Ciel / Sage 50 subscriptions to support the French obligation of 1 September 2026. CassKai for its part embeds French e-invoicing via the PPF and approved platforms, with the three core EN 16931 formats: Factur-X, UBL 2.1 and CII. The key difference: CassKai ALSO covers UEMOA e-invoicing (FNE Cote d'Ivoire, MECeF Benin, SECeF Niger / Mali / Burkina) in the same tool. For a business invoicing on both sides, that is a major differentiator. The exact terms (which partner platform, included or optional) should be confirmed at subscription time for each vendor.
