CassKai vs Zoho Books: the Africa-first alternative to the Zoho ecosystem

Zoho Books is part of a very rich SaaS ecosystem (CRM, Projects, Mail, Inventory). In Africa, it is an excellent generalist choice. But SYSCOHADA is not supported, support runs on IN/US time zones, and the regional focus stays Anglophone. For African SMEs looking for a tool built FOR Africa (cash-first, native SYSCOHADA, FR/EN support), we built CassKai.

Overview

Zoho Books is published by Zoho Corporation (India / US), a major SaaS player founded in 1996, with over 100 million cumulative users across the entire Zoho suite. Zoho Books is their cloud accounting module, launched in 2011. It covers 180+ countries, including an active presence in Anglophone Africa (Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda) and a quieter one in Francophone Africa. Its main strength is native integration with the rest of the Zoho suite: Zoho CRM, Zoho Projects, Zoho Inventory, Zoho Mail, Zoho People — a 45+ app ecosystem sharing the same contacts, pipeline and data.

Observed limitations for the African context:

CassKai is Africa-first by design, with a team based in Paris and Abidjan (GMT+0 / GMT+1 time zones), native SYSCOHADA, PCG and SCF, 8-provider Mobile Money (M-Pesa Daraja, MTN MoMo, Airtel, Wave, Orange, Moov, T-Cash, T-Money) with automatic accounting reconciliation, and a GPT-4 AI assistant trained on the 4 accounting standards covering Africa. We do not pretend to replace Zoho One: if you are already using Zoho CRM, Zoho Projects and Zoho Mail intensively, switching cost is real. However, if you are starting out or if accounting is your central need, CassKai is the Africa-native option.

CassKai is published by Noutche Conseil, a chartered accounting and financial advisory firm focused on Francophone West Africa.

Strengths

CassKai

  • Africa-first by design: SYSCOHADA, French PCG, Algerian SCF and IFRS built into one product — Zoho does not cover SYSCOHADA, PCG or SCF.
  • Native Mobile Money across 8 providers (M-Pesa, MTN MoMo, Airtel, Wave, Orange, Moov, T-Cash, T-Money) with automatic accounting reconciliation. Zoho covers M-Pesa and partially MTN, but lacks Francophone coverage (Wave, Orange Money, Moov).
  • Full French UI — key for Francophone African accounting teams. Zoho Books is not available in French.
  • Sub-Saharan timezone support (GMT+0/+1/+2) with team in Paris and Abidjan. Zoho mostly runs on IN (GMT+5:30) and US (GMT-8/-5).
  • GPT-4 AI assistant trained on SYSCOHADA, PCG, IFRS and SCF — understands African accounting nuances. Zoho's Zia AI stays generalist.

Zoho Books

  • Unique Zoho One ecosystem: 45+ integrated apps (CRM, Projects, Mail, Inventory, People, Desk, Books, Analytics, etc.) with shared contacts and data.
  • Mature iOS / Android mobile apps, polished design, embedded invoice scanning, offline-first operation.
  • Very rich and well-documented open API — ideal for developers and custom integrations.
  • Global presence in 180+ countries, multilingual support (EN, ES, DE, IT, JA, AR), very competitive USD pricing.
  • Active Kenya / Nigeria tax roadmap: Zoho shipped KRA eTIMS and FIRS e-invoicing in 2024-2025 (to re-confirm in production), proving they track African local obligations.

Migration Guide

Migrating from Zoho Books to CassKai is a classic export-import operation:

  1. Step 1 - Zoho Books export (week 1): from Zoho Books > Settings > Data Backup, export the Trial Balance, invoices, contacts (customers + vendors), bills, bank transactions, General Ledger and Chart of Accounts in CSV. Zoho also supports a full export via API for larger volumes.
  2. Step 2 - Account mapping (weeks 2-3): CassKai's import wizard accepts Zoho CSVs and proposes automatic mapping to the target chart of accounts (IFRS, IFRS-SME, SYSCOHADA, PCG). Zoho uses a configurable chart, so mapping must be validated account by account the first time.
  3. Step 3 - 1-month parallel run (weeks 4-7): for cautious clients, 1 month of double posting to make sure entries and balances match.
  4. Step 4 - Cutover and Zoho deactivation (weeks 8-10): on the cut-off date, you stop Zoho Books and go 100% on CassKai. Keep the Zoho export for the local legal retention period.
  5. Zoho One special case: if you also use Zoho CRM, Zoho Projects, Zoho Mail, you have two options:
    (a) Migrate only Books to CassKai and keep the rest of Zoho One — both tools can coexist, CRM-accounting integration can be done via webhooks or periodic imports.
    (b) Migrate CRM and Projects to CassKai's native modules as well (our CRM and Projects modules are integrated with accounting).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can CassKai replace Zoho One entirely, or just Zoho Books?

It depends on your usage. Zoho One includes 45+ apps (CRM, Mail, Desk, Recruit, Survey, Analytics, etc.). CassKai natively includes Accounting, Invoicing, CRM, Inventory, HR, Banking, Projects, Contracts and Purchasing modules. If you use Zoho Mail, Zoho Desk (customer support) or Zoho Recruit intensively, these are not in CassKai and you will need to keep them at Zoho or find specialised alternatives. For core SME accounting + sales + project + HR functions, CassKai covers most of the need.

Why choose CassKai if Zoho Books is cheaper on sticker price?

On sticker price, Zoho Books Standard is slightly cheaper than CassKai Starter (USD 20 vs EUR 29). But compare what you get: CassKai Starter natively includes SYSCOHADA, PCG, IFRS, SCF, the GPT-4 AI assistant and 8-provider Mobile Money. Zoho Books Standard does not cover SYSCOHADA, Zia AI is in limited beta, French does not exist. If you need any of these capabilities, the initial price gap is largely absorbed by avoiding add-ons or manual restatements.

Zoho has shipped KRA eTIMS and FIRS — why would CassKai be better?

Zoho has indeed shipped KRA eTIMS Kenya (2024-2025) and FIRS Nigeria (2025, to be re-confirmed in production), we acknowledge that. Our eTIMS / FIRS roadmap is later (2026). However, our differentiators are elsewhere: SYSCOHADA for OHADA subsidiaries, PCG for French holding, French support, Francophone Mobile Money (Wave, Orange Money, Moov). If your operation is 100% Kenya or 100% Nigeria with no OHADA expansion planned, Zoho has a temporal advantage on eTIMS/FIRS. If you operate or plan to operate cross-Africa, CassKai is the integrated option.

Is CassKai's API as rich as Zoho Books'?

Zoho Books' public API is very mature (10+ years of development, exhaustive docs, official PHP/Python/Ruby SDKs). CassKai's API is more recent and covers the main endpoints (CRUD accounts, journals, invoices, payments, third parties, banks) with OAuth 2.0 authentication and webhooks. For standard integrations (Zapier-like, automation between external CRM and CassKai, sync with third-party banks), CassKai is more than enough. For very complex integrations or official SDKs in 5+ languages, Zoho has an edge. Our 2026 roadmap plans API enrichment (official Node.js and Python SDKs).

My team is used to Zia. How does CassKai's AI compare?

Zia (Zoho's AI) is rolling out broadly across the Zoho suite. It is a generalist product, trained on global data. CassKai uses GPT-4o (OpenAI's flagship model) with a proprietary "system prompt" specifically trained on the 4 accounting standards (SYSCOHADA, PCG, IFRS, SCF). Concretely: if you ask "How do I record a SYSCOHADA HAO asset disposal?", the CassKai AI gives you the correct class 81-82-19-21-28 entries. Generalist Zia would give you a generic IFRS accounting answer that does not map to the OHADA chart. This is a clear advantage for users in the OHADA zone.

How long does migration from Zoho Books take?

For a single-entity SME with standard volume (~500-2000 entries / month): 4 to 8 weeks in "safe" mode with 1-month parallel run. For cutover without parallel run, 2 to 3 weeks. Zoho advantage: CSV export is very clean and well-structured, which eases CassKai mapping. For multi-entity groups or Zoho One users with CRM + Projects + Books interconnected, 8 to 14 weeks depending on strategy (migrate all or just Books).
